#brahminscoffeebar #idlivada #bangalore support local eateries, takeaway south indian breakfast, brahmins’ coffee bar, idli, vada, chutney, kesari bath, khara bath, shankarapura, bangalore, bengaluru When it comes to soft, melt-in-the mouth idlis, all roads lead to Brahmins’ Coffee Bar idlis, or at least it did until the current situation. I visit this modest South Bengaluru eatery that’s big on its reputation to see how they are coping with life post covid, and take back a parcel of their entire menu consisting of all of four items only! Are the idlis still as soft? Well, you’ll have to watch this one to find out. Stay safe and happy eating! Note: This episode was first released in May 2020 and is being rerun to support Bengaluru eateries with takeaway orders in the current situation. Please support local eateries. Takeaway Dish Review Idli A coarse-grained porous idli that allows for the chutney to seep in, you can taste a slight tartness from the fermentation. With the spicy ghatti chutney, that is made of hurukadale, roasted Bengal gram, coconut and the idli takes on a bold, flavourful avatar. Pour the ‘telu’ or ‘flowy’ mint-coconut chutney over the idli to make for a bite that melts in the mouth. Rs. 34 (usd 0.45) for 2 idlis Uddina Vade It’s a tough act for the vade to follow the idli in takeaway mode, given that the vade is best savoured hot and crispy. However, a saving grace here is the vade is studded with curry leaves, green chillies, peppercorns, fresh coconut, thereby making for a flavourful bite. Soak up the past-warm vade with the chutney to relish the warming heat from the green chillies in the chutney. Rs. 25 (usd 0.3) per vade Khara Bath BCB’s khara bath is a flavourful one, embellished with curry leaves, toasted lentils, mustard seeds, grated coconut, coriander, tasty enough to be savoured sans the chutney. But if you like it spicy, go ahead and introduce it to the zesty gatti chutney. Rs. 25 (usd 0.3) Kesari Bath End your takeaway tiffin with the kesari bath! There’s tonnes of ghee that goes into this sweet semolina and vermicelli concoction and you can taste it in its lush richness. The flavours draw from the tangy fruitiness of the pineapple and the warming cloves. The plum raisins add a sugary pop when you bite into one. Rs. 25 (usd 0.3) Note: I haven’t rated these as I feel it would be unfair to rate South Indian breakfast items in a takeaway format. Since this is a rerun episode, prices of the dishes may have changed since. Brahmins’ Coffee Bar is open only in the mornings from 6am to 1030am presently.
