Not many know this, but the original version made at Babusingh’s Thakur Dharwad Pedha has a legacy that goes back over 150 years when a halwai (sweetmeat cook), Ramratan Singh migrated to Karnataka from Unnao near Lucknow to escape the plague. A new beginning was made in Dharwad where he would roam the markets with a tray of unique pedha to sell. It was only a matter of time before the taste of this roasted khoya creation caught the fancy of local palates, and like they say, the rest is history. Generations later, the Dharwad Pedha may be shipped across the globe, but is still handmade the old-fashioned way.
