Mahadev Rao moved to Peenya on the outskirts of Bengaluru, this area was a remote industrial outpost where a few factories lay scattered amongst fields. With a family of seven children to feed and educate, this couple rented a shed to run a small tiffin shop that fueled workers and staff in the manufacturing units around. Over time, the popularity of their homely vegetarian tiffin fare and meals grew, also earning for the humble eatery the moniker ‘Bhatru Hotel’, as the couple were constantly cooking and feeding customers. 34 years on Gurukrupa Bhats Canteen stands strong as a cornerstone in this now bustling suburb, a daily ritual for many of its patrons, for whom a day is incomplete without coffee, tiffin or a meal here. Now in his nineties, Mr Rao has left the running of the eatery to his sons who are involved in every aspect of the operation - from the cooking to the serving and speaking a kind word or two with their customers, many who share decades-old relationships with the place.
