Ramachandra Upadhyay, then barely in his teens, migrated from Saligrama, Udupi district, to Kanakapura to work in Vasu Hotel, an eatery famous even then for its masala dosae. This form of the dosae though was a foreign concept to Ramachandra, who coincidentally came from a small village called Parampalli, where the khali dosa was prepared as an offering to Lord Maha Vishnu. Notwithstanding his lack of knowledge, the young lad worked hard in the kitchen and in a span of 14 years was handed ownership of the Vasu Hotel by the then owners who wished to retire. Nearly 50 years on, this no-frills eatery located 50 kilometers from Bengaluru still reigns supreme, not just for its sumptuous masala dosae and other old-fashioned tiffin and sweet treats, but also for its honest approach to pricing.
