Seafood is scarce as there’s a deep sea trawling ban in force to help the ocean regenerate its marine stock. Whatever seafood is available is either sourced from the East coast or caught locally around the harbour or in estuaries along the coastline. It was against this backdrop that I received an unexpected call from Mrs. Komal Prabhu, the livewire restaurateur and culinary force behind Maharaja Restaurant invited me to a very special lunch of seasonal delicacies that were found only during this season - forest colocasia, foraged greens, thunder mushrooms, country mango, jackfruit, pickled mackerel, dried shrimp and more. I quickly accepted and found myself relishing some truly authentic GSB delicacies, many dishes that I hadn't tasted hitherto. I hope you enjoy this special monsoon episode too. Take care; stay safe and strong. Happy eating! Note: This was an invitational meal. The dishes are subject to availability and have to be pre-ordered in advance, but are definitely worth the advance planning and effort. During my last trip to Mangalore, I caught up with this affable restaurateur while she introduced me to the making of her style of the chicken ghee roast, and a rather unique dish, the boothai (sardine) nippat.
