#Breakfast #HighwayEateries #GourmetOnTheRoad The best breakfast spots on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway: Bidadi Thatte Idli, MTR Shivalli Restaurant, Maddur Tiffany’s. The Bengaluru Mysuru Highway is a busy one! And thanks to all that footfall, there’s definitely some great eateries that have popped up along the way. If you’re setting out early in the morning, these three eateries make for the ideal breakfast spots. Food Lovers’ Editor Kripal Amanna makes his first stop at Shri Renukambha Bidadi Thatte Idli, a small joint just off the highway in a town called Bidadi. The next stop on the highway is Shivalli, to sample their Rice Kadubu, a steamed rice-based dumpling served with chutney and sambar. The third and last stop is Maddur Tiffany’s. This famous eatery is popular for having invented the Maddur Vada, a delicious crispy, savoury, snack made with semolina, and flavoured with curry leaves, cashews and ghee! GOURMET ON THE ROAD RATINGS Shri Renukhambha Bidadi Thatte Idli THATTE IDLI these idlis are springy and very soft! they have a slight sour edge but eaten with that butter, it tastes heavenly! the chutneys served have a fiery, spicy bite to jolt your tastebuds awake! 9/10 MASALA VADE masala vada has a crispy, crunchy bite of the lentils along with the sweetness of onion and the surprise herbaceous note of dill. 7.5/10 UDDINA VADA crispy and very lightly seasoned. 7/10 Plate of Idli Vada Rs. 50 Maddur Tiffanys SPECIAL MADDUR VADA this feels and tastes like a scrumptious savoury cookie. there’s a prominent flavour of caramelized onions, curry leaves and cashew. rava in the batter gives it that grainy bite. it can feel dry after a few bites and needs that minty spicy chutney to moisten it. Rs. 23 9/10 COFFEE this is a frothy, well made coffee. it has the right amount of decoction and milk, and is served at just the right temperature. Rs. 26 8.5/10 Shivalli RICE KADUBU the batter is steamed in jackfruit leaves. this imparts a mild fragrance to the dish. the kadubu dissolves in your mouth. it pairs well with the tart sambar and is delicious with the coconut chutney too. Rs 50. 8.5/10 FILTER COFFEE frothy and strong, just the way coffee should be. make sure to pull it to cool the coffee down. #mysorehighway #vegetarian #breakfast popular restaurant on mysore highway, shivalli restaurant, mtr shivalli, mudagere, channapatna, bangalore mysore road, kotte kadubu, rajamudi rice, neer dosa, dose, kuchalakki, boiled rice, finger millet, ragi ambli, healthy food, healthy breakfast, highway breakfast, wheelchair accessible One of the earliest eateries on the Bengaluru - Mysuru route, Shivalli has recently emerged after an extensive renovation that imparts this 20-year-old popular highway destination a breezy, contemporary vibe that comes as a breath of fresh air in current times. It is heartening to note though that the food remains as traditional as ever, in fact, with some ‘new’ additions seeking to convey to diners the wholesome flavours of the good old days. On a recent drive to Mysuru, I stopped by for a delicious breakfast of nourishing porridge, kuchalakki (boiled rice) ganji, tenginkai haalu (coconut milk) ganji, ragi (finger millet) ambli, and also tasted a scrumptious neer dosa made of the very special Rajamudi rice, and their much-favoured kotte kadubu. Hope you enjoy this episode. Take care, stay safe and happy eating! Kotte Kadubu Soft and slightly grainy, the kadubu is a much-sought-after breakfast delicacy here; savour it with their flavourful south canara sambar and spicy ‘kai’ chutney Rs. 60 (usd 0.8) 8/10 Thenginkai Ganji Rice soaked in coconut milk and topped with a lashing of ghee. Pleasant in its aroma, flavour and texture, this is a porridge to savour if you’d like something light post a heavy meal the evening before. The cucumber served alongside provides an element of crunch. Rs. 60 (usd 0.8) 7/10 Kuchalakki Ganji Boiled rice, sourced from Kundapur, cooked simply with salt and served with a drizzle of hot ghee. Comforting in its nourishing flavours, the rice retains its form and is soft to the bite, having lent some of its starchy heft to the broth. The hand pounded chutney of green chillies, fresh coconut and rock salt provides a spicy edge to the ganji. Rs. 60 (usd 0.8) 8/10 Ragi Ambli The cumin is dominant in its flavour in this earthy but sumptuous broth of finger millets. There is also a delicate tinge of green chilli heat and pepper. Rs. 50 (usd 0.7) 7/10 Neer Dosa The Rajamudi rice lends a brownish tinge to the dose, and also a crusty crunch. The dose is roasted with generous lashings of ghee, ensure you ask for your dose to be kadak. The flavours are quite unlike a traditional neer dose; although enjoyable on its own when hot, the bela kai, jaggery with fresh grated coconut makes for a delicious companion. If you like a touch of spice, there is the chutney too. Rs. 60 (usd 0.8) 9/10 Filter coffee Rs. 25 (usd 0.3) 8/10 Kripal Amanna, Gourmet On The Road, Food Lovers TV TIMINGS: 7am through 930pm, open all days. Note: On google maps, the eatery comes up as MTR SHivalli restaurant, it has no connection to MTR restaurants. Google maps will take you to the eatery on the left hand side of the highway enroute to Mysuru; however the eatery that we visited is on the opposite side a few metres down the road.
