#koshys #bangalore #popularrestaurant popular bangalore restaurant, bengaluru, koshys cafe, koshys bakery, jewel box, popular breakfast in bangalore, popular lunch, coffee shop, bakery, all day breakfast, mutton omelette, tomato cheese toast, fish biryani, kerala prawn fry, chilli chicken, plum cake, coffee Most of my visits to Bengaluru’s iconic Koshy’s, an eatery that dates back to pre-independence times, have almost always been for their all-day breakfast. Simple omelettes, comforting toasts made with wholesome bread from their bakery, old-fashioned cutlets and sandwiches, the sort that can brighten up a dull day. In this episode, filmed just before they closed doors owing to the current crisis, I partake of a couple of their breakfast must-haves, their crowd-pleasing fish biriyani and a prawn fry that pays ode to the establishment’s Keralan roots, and also take a look at how they tried their their best to keep serving customers in these trying times. I hope this landmark cafe, an indelible part of the city’s history, emerges stronger in due course. Take care and stay safe. Do catch our previous Koshy’s episode for an in-depth look at their history and the must-have breakfast dishes here: KOSHY’S BEST BREAKFAST DISHES| Mutton Cutlet, Appam Stew, English Brekkie... Exclusive KITCHEN TOUR https://youtu.be/YCMp44D6jak Tomato Cheese Toast This dish celebrates the sweet tartness and textures of tomato - crisp dices, sauteed near pulpy bits and thick sauce slathered over thick toast of Koshy’s homemade bread. Shavings of cheese round off the flavours with savoury notes. Rs. 170 (usd 2.3) 8/10 Mutton Omelette Food doesn’t have to be complicated, but the sort where it touches your soul. Like this simple omelette, beaten egg rolled around mutton mince that seasoned sparingly, sings the flavor of the meat. Savoured with some toast and butter, this is the breakfast of Koshy’s champions! Rs. 240 (usd 3.2) 8/10 Chilli Chicken Koshy’s version of this Sino-Indian staple that one will only find in India is generous in the peppers and onions, but lacking in some chilli punch one would expect. I also wish the sauce had permeated the chicken better. Rs. 360 (usd 4.8) 6/10 Fish Biriyani This fish biriyani has been on Koshy’s menu for decades and is the sort that requires one to redefine the notions of a biryani. Composed of plump steaks of kingfish, fried, cooked in a gravy and then topped with basmati rice, it isn’t one for the biryani purist, but certainly makes an impression on the palate. Rs. 430 (usd 5.8) 7/10 Kerala Prawn Fry A delicious preparation of tiny fried chemmeen, prawns. One can taste the sweetness of the prawns juxtaposed against the toasty herbaceousness of the curry leaves, the singe of pepper, the lilt of coriander and other spices. Rs. 500 (usd 6.7) 9/10 Plum Cake Koshy’s plum cake has legions of fans not just in Bengaluru and the country but across the world. The fruits are macerated, rendering a slightly bitter edge against the sweetness and subtle spicing of this plum cake that is not as heady and alcohol-laced as some traditional cakes can be. It makes for the perfect sweet close to a meal here with some coffee. Rs. 40 (usd 0.5) 9/10 Koshy’s Special Coffee Rs. 52 (usd 0.7) 8/10 ADDRESS- Koshy’s Parade Cafe, No. 39, St Marks Road, Shanthala Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560001 LOCATION TAG- https://goo.gl/maps/N8rjbD3qRNwwdu8x8 SUPPORT FOOD LOVERS If you enjoyed this video, please consider supporting Food Lovers TV. Rs.130 9/10 CLUB SANDWICH Fried egg, slice of ham. roast lamb, chicken, tomatoes, onions, and some lettuce all encased in that soft bread from Koshy's bakery. You get the flavour of the roast meat, the pungent bite of onions. There’s the creaminess of the egg enveloping it. Rs. 190 8.5/10 APPAM AND MUTTON STEW Traditionally only served on a Sunday. The mellow, creamy coconut milk has a hint of whole spices. The meat has soaked in the flavours of the stew but the flavour of the meat itself shines through. Rs.170 10/10 COFFEE Nice and strong with a robust hit. Just the thing you need to pick you up after a big heavy breakfast here.
