Today, we're diving deep into the heart of authentic Karnataka cuisine at Mavalli Tiffin Rooms (MTR) Lalbagh – a name synonymous with Bengaluru's culinary identity for nearly a century, and a definitive landmark for anyone who lived here in the 80s and 90s. MTR isn't just a restaurant; it's a living piece of history. Established in 1924 as the 'Brahmin Coffee Club,' it evolved into the MTR we know today, setting gold standards for hygiene, quality, and of course, its legendary food. Join me as I take on the magnificent MTR Lunch Thali – a truly epic vegetarian feast featuring over 20 sumptuous items! From the refreshing Kosambri, vibrant Bendekayi Palya, and fluffy Poori Sagoo, to the classic Masala Dosæ. We then moved through multiple rice courses: fragrant Chitranna, comforting Bisi Bele Bath, cooling Mosaru Bajji, rich Anna Sambar, zesty Anna Rasam, and even creamy Curd Rice! The grand finale included the essential Fruit Salad with Ice Cream, traditional Paan, and a Date Halwa. I made sure to arrive early, even before opening, and was greeted by a queue of eager diners already waiting for their lunch tokens – a testament to MTR's timeless appeal, even decades after its prime in the 90s. I also managed to get an exciting glimpse into the bustling kitchens, seeing the magic firsthand: pooris puffing up, rava idlis steaming, and mini masala dosa being expertly roasted for the lunch rush. In this video, I'll not only share my honest review of every incredible dish but also delve briefly into MTR's fascinating origins – how this legendary lunch thali came to be, and its enduring legacy that cemented its place as a 90s Bengaluru icon. Did MTR Lalbagh live up to its legendary status? Watch till the end to find out! Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more deep dives into Bengaluru's iconic restaurants from the 90s! #ctr #mtr #vidyarthibhavan most popular masala dosas in bangalore, masala dosae, tiffin, ctr, mtr, mavalli tiffin rooms, lalbagh, vidyarthi bhavan, basavanagudi, bengaluru, bangalore When it comes to the ubiquitous masala dosae here in Bengaluru, everyone has an opinion, actually many opinions, and clear favourites. Stuck at home during the recent lockdown, I couldn’t help but reminisce tasting three of Bengaluru’s most popular versions, and put together a special compilation for you, highlights of the CTR, MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room, Lalbagh) and Vidyarthi Bhavan masala dosae from Gourmet On The Road. Hope you enjoy this short and scrumptious bonus video; take care, stay safe and happy eating! CTR Benne Masala Dosa This butter-drenched gold-hued dose is blessed with the perfect gentle crackle. On the palate, one tastes the lushness of the homemade butter that envelopes every bite of the dose, the palya and the chutney with its delicious veil. If you need one reason to visit CTR, this would be it. Rs. 57 (usd 0.8) 10/10 MTR MASALA DOSA The dosa here is iconic and never disappoints. Made with a blend of three rice varieties, including two red rice varieties that lend a toasty colour tone, the dose is crisp outside and soft within. The palya is seasoned just right. Rs. 90 (usd 1.3) 10 Vidyarthi Bhavan Masala Dosa If you need one reason to visit Vidyarthji Bhavan, this would be it. A dose that’s crisp and lacey in parts, soft and fluffy in others, and hides within its single fold a creamy potato palya. The chutney is spicy and vivacious, a bold complement to the gentle flavours of the dose and palya. However, his constant travel on the circuit has meant that there are aspects of namma ooru that he hasn’t been able to explore yet, including Mavalli Tiffin Rooms in Lalbagh. And so we took it upon ourselves to introduce this icon to a Bengaluru tiffin legend over a leisurely, indulgent-breakfast conversation where we also caught a glimpse of his passion for coffee, and his role as the ambassador for the World Coffee Conference, to be held in India for the first time in our city in September. Hope you enjoy this tiffin talk. Take care; stay safe and strong. Happy eating! Kripal Amanna Gourmet On The Road & Founder, Food Lovers TV Ps. #mtr #vegetarian #supportlocal support local eateries, takeaway, mtr, mavalli tiffin rooms, lalbagh, vegetarian lunch, thaali, rava idli, masala dosa, hema malini maiya, bangalore, bengaluru Step into Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, the city’s oldest eatery, In this throwback episode to see how they have evolved their popular 21-item traditional lunch to a more convenient and packaging-friendly 9-dish mini-meal. From revamped, sanitised processes to consolidated menus, this century-old institution is revamping and reworking processes to meet the needs of the current situation. But then, that shouldn’t come as a surprise, because after all, they do have a tradition of innovating through adversities in the past, as illustrated in the invention of the rava idli during the rice famine of the 40s, or the seed for MTR packaged foods that was sown during the 1975-77 emergency. Note: This episode was first released in May 2020 and is being rerun to support Bengaluru eateries with takeaway orders in the current situation. Please do support local eateries. Mini Meals No longer the enormous spread that would be a delicious gateway to a post-lunch slumber, the mini meals is compact in its post-covid avatar. But that doesnt get in the way of making for a satisfying lunch, puri, saagu, rice, rasam, palya, mosaru anna, poppadom, uppinakayi and payasam, the mini meal has all that you need to savour a taste of Mavalli Tiffin Room. Rs. 162 (usd 2.1) 8/10 Masala Dose Although packed in a foil-lined box, the masala dose is missing its crunch in takeaway mode, understandably, as opposed to when savoured at the restaurant. You can heat it on a tava with a dollop of ghee to make some amends, and the flavours are trademark MTR, the sprightly chutney smeared inside the dosa and the flavourful, bright aloogadde palya. The chutney is rich in coconut and green chilli spice. All in all, makes for a delicious takeaway dose, once you get past the expectation of eating something crisp. Rs. 90 (usd 1.2) Rava Idli A dish born of a crisis, the rava idli is said to have been invented in the kitchens of Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, when there was a shortage of rice during the famine of the 40s. This is a flavourful rava idli that is rich in yoghurt, embellished with coriander, mint, coconut and topped with toasted cashew, and does spectacularly well as a takeaway. The aloogadde sagu serves well to moisten the idli with its savoury character.
