Shimoga- A 300km drive from Namma Bengaluru is a perfect place to try different breakfast eateries , Snacks and chats. We started the food tour at one of the most famous Chats Shop. 1. Bhatru Pani puri Eshtablished in the year 1990 is well known among localites for their chats. We tried their Masala Puri and Pani puri. I personally loved the masala puri which had the masala flavour domination with a little sweet and a little tanginess. Pani puri is well made and the pani was tangy and unique in taste. A must try chat place when you are at Shimogga. DVS Circle Pani puri Another well known place for chats is DVS circle pani puri. It has made its name among localites since many years and since it is located next to DVS circle people call it as DVS circle pani puri and its become famous that way. We tried their Sev puri here and its completely different to what we eat in Bangalore. Here it is prepared with pani puri puri and masala puri masala is poured inside the puri along with other spices and masalas. And finally a handful of sev is place on the plate and served. A complete unique experience. Do give it a try if you visit Shimogga. Kolhapur Chats A new eatery eshtablished 9 years ago serves Kolhapur based authentic chats at Shimogga. We tried their Kolhapuri Bhel and trust me it was one of the best since its prepared by the person who is from Kolhapur itself.It was more on tangy and sweet flavour and a little spicy. A perfect snack for the evening! Meenakshi Bhavan We wanted to start our Day 2 of our trip at Iconic and Legendary Hotel and Hence we started with Meenakshi Bhavan. As per the hotel owner says - the hotel has history of 100 years and is famous for Masala dosa , Paddu and Avalakki (Poha). So we tried all these three dishes and the major highlight is definately Paddu which was perfectly made with crispy outer layer and soft inside served along with cocount chutney is a must try. The avalakki was fine and was sweet in flavour served along with thick curd. Masala dosa is roasted well and has more on crispy texture and comes with aloo palya and coconut chutney. Try this place for its Paddu and other breakfast eateries if you are at Shimogga. When I called out for Shimoga, this restaurant received the most recommendations. And those in the know may not be surprised given the fact that Sri Meenakshi Bhavan has been an integral part, actually a pioneer of the city’s culinary landscape for over a century now. The space that it occupies was once the owning family’s ancestral abode and that energy also seems to permeate through the homely old-fashioned decor and the South Canara inspired fare here. The food is tasty, sumptuous and satisfying, made to traditional recipes by cooks, many who have served in the kitchens here for decades. Whilst the benne masala dosae may come as the most recommended dish, the vade, avalakki mosaru, paddu too are as rewarding as I found during a breakfast visit where I also had the opportunity to converse with the restaurant’s third generation owner, Mr Chandrashekar and his daughter, Ganavi.
